Carlos de León shares the profound teachings of Kashmir Shaivism from the Pratyabhijna School through the text “The Heart of Recognition from the Siddha Kshemeraja." Through Trika Shaivism, this workshop series will provide experiential learning to penetrate the state of recognition.
Kashmir Shaivism, or Trika Shaivism, is a nondualist Hindu tradition of Shaiva-Shakta Tantra that originated in Kashmir sometime after 850 CE. Since this tradition originated in Kashmir, it is often called "Kashmiri Shaivism," although it is believed to have existed well before this time. The word Trika represents the three primary energies of creation: para (supreme), apara (lowest), and parapara (a combination of the lowest and the highest). In the thought of the Trika, it is admitted that this whole universe and every action in it, whether spiritual, physical, or worldly, exist in these three energies. Trika (“threefold” or “triad”) refers to the triple consideration of the Divine: Shiva (the masculine principle), Shakti (the feminine principle), and Anu (the individual soul), as well as to the possession of three sets of scriptures, and to several other triads on which this system is based. The Trika System comprises four sub-systems or schools: the Pratyabhijna system, the Kula system, the Krama system, and the Spanda system. The four systems that comprise the Trika system all accept and are based on the same scriptures (agamas). Pratyabhijna System Pratyabhijna means “to spontaneously recognize and realize your true self,” a term that refers to the direct recognition of the Divine Essence. There are no upayas (means) in the Pratyabhijna system. You must recognize who you are, whether in the rapture of the Supreme Being or the daily experience; you recognize your own nature right then and there without moving anywhere or doing anything. The Pratyabhijna school is close to the teachings of Dzogchen and Essential Mahamudra. Introduction to the Pratyabhijna school is through the text “The Heart of Recognition, from the Siddha Kshemeraja." In this course, we study the text's 20 sutras, or verses, inviting us to have this “instant recognition of who we are" from different perspectives. We enrich the experience by presenting, with each sutra, one of the 112 meditation methods of the Vijnana Bhairava, another important Trika text that teaches about our nature and meditation practice. From the 4th class on, we have, along with explanations, 2 or 3 meditations to help penetrate the experience of the state of consciousness. This series invites you to experience “The Heart of Recognition.” This text comes to us from the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism, which associates supreme consciousness with Lord Shiva. Composed in the 10th century by Kshemaraja—a philosopher and disciple of the sage Abhinavagupta—the entire work consists of only 20 sutras. It gives us the secret or “heart” (hridaya) of an otherwise large volume of teachings regarding the process, by stages, through which divine consciousness becomes the world of various forms and then delights in its recognition (pratyabhijna) of itself, as revealed in the dynamics of our own particular consciousness. Program Benefits: Program Components: “Sutra” in Indian literary traditions refers to a verse or a collection of aphorisms in the form of a manual or, more broadly, condensed text. As you participate in this series, may your understanding blossom into knowledge which brings you closer to the recognition of your own Divine Nature! Carlos de León,
