This workshop series of ten classes offers an exploration of the journey through "The Mansions or The Interior Castle" and "The Dark Night of the Soul" in the light of Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology. Join Carlos de Leon for a profound mystical journey into the "Interior Castles" of our being.

Saints Teresa and John, who belonged to the order of the Carmelites and were friends, created the most important examples of 16th-century Spanish mystical literature. Combined, their work is considered a description of the mystic's journey toward the ultimate communion with God.

She says the soul is like a castle made out of pure crystal. It has seven sets of dwelling places, or “rooms,” that lead one after another from the outside of the castle to its very center. At the center is God Almighty.

The poem of St. John of the Cross, in 8 stanzas of 5 lines each, narrates the journey of the soul to a mystical union with God. The journey is called "The Dark Night" in part because darkness represents the fact that the destination—God—is unknowable. The first verse of the poem is translated as:

On an obscure night

Fevered with love's anxiety

(O hapless, happy plight!)

I went, none seeing me

Forth from my house, where all things quiet be...

John of the Cross (Spanish: Juan de la Cruz; born Juan de Yepes y Álvarez; 24 June 1542 – 14 December 1591), venerated as Saint John of the Cross, was a Spanish Catholic priest, mystic, and a Carmelite friar of converso origin.

Through this series, you are invited to experience a reinterpretation of their work through the eyes of Transpersonal Psychology. Eager to understand the dynamic of psychological transformation in this mystical model, we will suggest some practical applications for our own transformation, and bring new light to the mystical practices proposed by Teresa.

Program Benefits:

  • To understand the value of a path centred on Divine Love that will cleanse and purify the heart;

  • To clarify the connections between the psychology of St. John's day and the spiritual disciplines necessary for a deep “psychotherapy” that reflects one’s existence as having significance, purpose, and coherence;

  • To understand "The Dark Night" and the even deeper insights from St. John on the ways in which God also draws us into the “Passive Nights of Sense and Spirit”;

  • To gain a fuller appreciation of St. John’s psychology and spirituality in conjunction with insights from modern studies of attachment, trauma, and healing;

  • To discover levels of understanding and participate in practices that explore our inner experience and our life's activities, attempting to find the truly relevant, and the transcendent.

Program Components:

Consistent with Ontogony’s approach to the path of transformation, we use several models and traditions, offering an ample spectrum for understanding and exploration. This mystical journey provides a beautiful bridge from the foundation of our existence to the transcendent search for the Divine. In this series, you will have an opportunity to discover and experience:

  • Las Moradas, or the "Rooms", which represent the "Seven Levels of Achieving Divine Marriage with God";

  • Purification processes through Meditation and Prayer of the Spiritual Heart, containing the Seven Chambers;

  • Levels of Consciousness in Psychology are outlined as a Map of Levels of Enlightenment through the invitation of Divine Love Experiences;

  • A Path of Practice that includes a range of Meditation Techniques, Prayer Practice & Reflection to Inspire;

  • Steps to heal and transform normal neurosis, followed by a process of awakening that is centred on God’s Love, and perfecting this in us;

  • Explore a Spiritual Transpersonal approach to therapy and the theme of Demons, a way to describe the work with the shadow;

  • The final step to ascending towards Divine Union is the ultimate marriage with God.

"The Dark Night of the Soul" does not refer to life's difficulties in general, although it can be taken to refer to such trials. Rather, these are the nights in which the soul experiences the two necessary purgations on the path to Divine Union: the first purgation is of the sensory or sensitive part of the soul, the second of the spiritual part (Ascent of Mount Carmel). Such purgations comprise the first of the three stages of the mystical journey, followed by those of illumination and then union.

Join us for a profound mystical journey into the "Interior Castles" of our being.
