ESSENCE MAHAMUDRA RETREAT

ESSENCE MAHAMUDRA RETREAT

EXPERIENCE THE PROFOUND PRACTICES OF  ESSENCE MAHAMUDRA, in a beautiful retreat setting with Dr. Carlos de León.

This 7-Day Residential Retreat, May 25 through May 31, 2019, covers the final year* of a 4-year study program. Essence Mahamudra offers the student practices which cultivate ‘Simultaneous Realization and Liberation’; transmitted through a path more profound and wondrous than Sutra and Tantra Mahamudra. As the aim of this level of practice is the realization of the true nature of mind, which is called thamal gyi shepa, or ordinary mind.

*Each year of this 4-year program offers a complete cycle of practices, empowerments, and teachings. While it is desirable to do the program sequentially, the Fourth Year Retreat can also accommodate first-time students.

The union of great bliss and emptiness, sustained by the clear light of one’s true nature, is considered the goal of the highest Yoga Tantra. This year’s Essence Mahamudra practices are aimed at the attainment of Buddhahood using: Tilopa’s Mahamudra Song.

Tilopa was a great Buddhist sage, living at the beginning of 11th century (988–1069) in India. It is believed he received Mahamudra Teachings from primordial Buddha Vajradhara himself, and, he later transmitted the Mahamudra Song to Naropa near the Ganges river, when he completed his twelve austerities given by his Guru.

The Mahamudra Song of Tilopa contains the ‘Essence’ of all the Mahamudra teachings and is considered to be the highest of all the Mahamudra cycle. It has a close relation to the Pratyabhijna School Kashmir Shaivism, which teaches instant penetration to the liberated state.

Vajrayogini’s Eleven Yogas of Generation Stage Practice as Revealed by Naropa. This ‘Sublime Path to Kechara Paradise’ will be offered as complementary practices to Essence Mahamudra.

Vajrayogini is a female Buddha who embodies one’s innermost essence and is associated with the mother tantras of anuttarayoga tantra.  Her practice guides all living beings to the Pure Land of Kechara, or Pure Dakini Land. This main body of teachings has eleven limbs, which are called the “eleven yogas.” She is the ultimate flowering of the female energy that lies within all of us, a fully enlightened Buddha, the essence of totality- beyond duality and beyond ego.

  • Embraced by natural beauty. Inspired by wisdom and meditation. Learning how to die is also learning how to live…present, aware, connected to our transcendental nature.  ~ MP
  • Fascinating, nourishing, fun…an unanticipated pleasure my renewed relationship with the Divine and more “cordial”  and empowered relationship with Death!  I am still bouncing with energy and gratitude and looking madly forward to Mahamudra Three! ~ PM
  • As I walked from the meditation room and into serene beauty of Loon Lake that surrounds me, I suddenly felt the impact of all that had transpired suddenly lands in my heart. It was/is potent and inspiring teaching…it feels nothing less than divine! ~ CE
